Wild center Mason Shaw tore his ACL in Saturday’s loss to the Golden Knights and is out for the remainder of the season, Minnesota announced Monday. Here’s what you need to know:

  • Shaw crumpled to the ice in pain after an awkward collision into the boards five minutes into the game. He had to be helped off the ice and picked up to get into the bench and down the tunnel.
  • Shaw, 24, already had to overcome three ACL surgeries to make it to the NHL.
  • The 2017 fourth-round pick has seven goals and 10 assists in 59 games this season. Minnesota, first in the Western Conference at 44-23-9, has six games left in the regular season.

Mason Shaw suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee in Saturday's game at Vegas and will miss the remainder of this season.

How Shaw’s injury impacts the Wild

The injury to Shaw was devastating to Wild teammates who have known his journey: This is the second time he’s torn his ACL in his right knee.

On the ice, Brandon Duhaime slides into Shaw’s spot on the fourth line and penalty kill. But they’ll miss Shaw’s infectious energy and attitude, as Marcus Foligno called him a “heart and souler.”

Shaw, a pending restricted free agent, is the kind of player that can come back from it.

“Billy (Guerin) asks young players all the time, ‘Will you do anything to play in the National Hockey League? Anything,’” coach Dean Evason said. “And Mason Shaw epitomizes that. He did everything and anything to play in the (NHL) and he will again.” — Smith

Backstory

Shaw played in three games with the Wild in the 2021-22 season. He previously played for the AHL’s Iowa Wild and for the WHL’s Medicine Hat Tigers.
