So the latest Iggy Azalea rumors are drawing big headlines today. Talking to Andy Cohen on Watch What Happens Live, Iggy said: “The craziest rumor that I’ve ever heard, that really went around, was that I had a sex change when I turned 18 and that I was born with a penis and my name was Corey.” She added: “Why would my name be Corey? It would be Liam, that’s my boy name. My mom always said if I was a boy I’d be named Liam.” She also opened up about the plastic surgery’s she gotten: namely breast and nose surgery.
The rapper explained: “f you’re going to do something that’s obvious [it’s best to be open]. Everyone’s seen what your nose looks like before. “Some people are like, ‘It’s contouring!’ Yeah, contouring with a chisel.”
Azalea also brushed off rumors that she’s in a feud with pop star Britney Spears. She said that the two never had a fight but that she’d rather see Jennifer Lopez perform in Vegas. So all of this has got me thinking? How does one Iggy Azalea rumor make it to the big stage and others just sit in the basement? Since I know you’ve been thinking that too, I decided to make a fool proof guide on how to create Iggy Azalea rumors without looking like an amateur. To me, you’re looking at a 4 step process.
1. Do your research
It’s one thing to just say something out of thin air like “Iggy Azalea was born a man.” Actually that one’s kind of easy because there’s a bit of a look there that one could see how this might be possible. P.S. I think Azalea is attractive but I can definitely see where people would be coming from. Anyway, let’s get to the research. If you’re going to start a rumor about someone and you want it to stick, do your research. What does that mean? Simple. It means knowing everything you possibly can about the person you’re starting a rumor about. In the case of Iggy Azalea you want to read her entire history. You want to know who she’s been in a relationship with. What we parents were like. Where she’s from. Where she’s been. You want to follow her on all of her social media accounts and get a sense of what her interests are. Seriously, find out everything you can. Dig up photos, find any and all dirt you possibly can on this person. Did she know some doctor 20 years ago? Great, that’s a starting point on potentially making up something about surgery or any kind of past affliction she had. Are there any crime reports? If so, could you make something up that might not have been in the report? Can you get close enough that it seems real without actually having to prove anything?
2. Choose wisely and ask yourself questions
OK you’ve done your research. You’ve picked a topic. You’re ready to make up a rumor. First of all, pick the wording of your rumor wisely. Write out at least 20 versions of what your rumor is going to be. Which headline looks the best? Which is most eye catching? Really dig into it. Think to yourself, “would I want to read this entire article based on the headline?” When you’ve chosen your rumor you’ve got to ask yourself a few questions. Does this seem real? You want to make sure it’s crazy enough to make headlines but also believable enough that people won’t think it’s that far fetched. Which means you have to ask another question. How quickly can this rumor be proven false? You really want to make sure there’s a nice trail here but that it stops at a point where it’s all speculation but it can’t ever be UNproven. Or at least that’s your main goal. What people can you make up? What locations don’t exist but that can be fabricated? You gotta dig deep her folks. Seriously.
3. Craft your marketing plan
This one’s a two step process. Research every possible celebrity outlet that can break this story. That means your big boys like TMZ or Radaronline. Anyone that can make this thing stick. Find out who works there. Go to their Twitter pages, Instagram pages, Facebook Pages. Find places to insert your rumor. Make a list of 20,30,40 people to reach out to who can make this rumor go big and figure out what you want to say. In the case of a rumor you really want that rumor to be your subject line in any emails. That’ll draw people in. Then you start your marketing. Be personal in your emails. Let the person know you follow their work. Say something nice about them. Really connect with your media people. Then drop the bomb about the rumor and craft an intelligent email. Give them a trail to follow but again, nothing too deep where they can disprove anything. If you do this right, someone will drop your rumor somewhere significant.
4. Don’t get made
If you’re going to spread a rumor don’t be an idiot and reveal who you are. Create fake email accounts, twitter accounts, etc etc so that you’re believable enough to people but so that they can’t really find out who you are. You need an alias so that you can spread rumors again and again. If you want to be a rumor spreading machine, it takes time, work, and effort.
Good luck in all your Iggy Azalea rumor spreading endeavors!
