After properly introducing you to pop-punk trio SHADED it’s time for us to give you the lowdown on their new EP A Familiar Love. Released via Common Ground Records we think that you’re going to love it just as much as we do.
The release opens with Dream Girl which dives right into the pop-punk world with a fiery, sing-along vibe. Singing of a girl who could have been the one for you but it just doesn’t work out, then you realise she’s not actually your dream girl. SHADED have the skill of turning an emotive topic into something incredibly catchy, with big breakdowns and intricate guitar work. It’s clear to see this track when performed live is going to be a party starter.
The title track and recent single A Familiar Love has a heavier focus on the guitars from Callum Irons and Dan Bradberry. Fluttering in tempos and showing off some nifty vocal layering it’s great to see the trio not feeling tied to one style or sound on this release. Looking for the good in the times you had with someone even if it didn’t end well it maintains an emotionally powerful theme. Another already heard track is single Tell Me, which we’ll be honest might be our favourite offering from SHADED. Getting beneath your skin instantly you’ll find yourself tapping along before Matt East’s quirky vocals come in full force. Flaunting the catchiest chorus on the EP, lyrics such as “tell me I’m fine for the hundredth time” are filled with angst and the power to captive crowds at their upcoming co-headline shows with Wolf Culture.
Dead Feelings makes it clear that there’s similarities throughout the EP about the places which these tracks have come from. Singing about “I’m not your scapegoat lover, now I see life in colour” highlights the toxicity of a relationship and the impacts it can have on your own belief and power. This is SHADED’s version of a ballad, a whole new side and even a stripped-down acoustic-esque section. Closing track You. brings back the heavier side of the trio with an explosive instrumental introduction to set the scene and the addition of synths. With a rowdy, rough undertone it once again sings of heartbreak and loss when you just can’t get over someone and it sticks with you but knowing that the positives of the situation are the ones to look for. However, we’d say this is the weakest track on the release but it’s still absolute fire. Which really does say something doesn’t it?
SHADED have already become CelebMix regulars with their catchy pop-punk with a rock edge and we don’t think you’ll be forgetting them any time soon. We’re suckers for a good sing-along with some heartfelt lyrics thrown in and that’s what the trio have given listeners.
