With the initial release on March 9th, ’10 Cloverfield Lane’, labelled as a spiritual sequel of the 2008 monster movie ‘Cloverfield’, has left audiences on the edge of their seats.
10 Cloverfield Lane was directed by Dan Trachtenberg and also produced by J.J Abrams, known for producing Star Wars: The Force Awakens as well as the Star Trek reboots. J.J Abrams produced this film in secret, so when the trailer was released, nobody had any idea the film was even being made.
The story of 10 Cloverfield Lane, follows a woman named Michelle (played by Mary Elizabeth Winstead) after she survives a car accident and wakes up in an underground bunker with 2 strangers. Two men, Howard (John Goodman) and Emmett (John Gallagher Jr), live inside the bunker after Howard claims there is a massive chemical attack which has left the air unbreathable.
Mary Elisabeth Winstead’s character, Michelle, is sceptical of being in the bunker and demands to be let out. Howard, an ex-military officer, denies her and Emmett any access to the surface, claiming that it is toxic and the world is in fallout.
Michelle, of course, is seen in the trailer, tries to escape, going against Howard’s wishes and judgements.
Of course, there was a lot of expectation on whether or not it would live up to the previous film, and even if there was going to be any alien activity. But the makers and producers stressed that it was a spiritual sequel, which was not likely to follow the same story line.
But 10 Cloverfield Lane did its own thing. It’s a very dark and tense movie with a Mystery/Drama/Horror genre connected to it. It will leave you on the edge of your seat and of course, make you jump. Throughout the film, it makes you think without you realising it, it makes you analyse the characters and take sides subconsciously, which is great for what the film is. Although, it seems like it would be better enjoyed if you disconnected it from the original film entirely, treating it as its own stand alone movie, rather than comparing it to the last.
At present, 10 Cloverfield Lane has made $68.8 million in box office, which leads to the question, will there be another movie?
